I sat here. She sat there across from me. For minutes that seemed like hours, neither of us said anything. She said that she had things that she wanted to talk about. She didn't need to say a word, yet we understood each other.

I always say that you never need an excuse to talk to me. I'm different: I always need an excuse if I want to talk to you.

Dear church people, you keep making a fuss about this whole concept of bringing friends to church and reaching out to them. Great. I agree. However, when you have bigots in the church or when you tolerate bigotry in the church, why should I bring them?

Francisco de Goya — The Third of May 1808: The Execution of the Defenders of Madrid

Okay, there's a thought that's been with me all day. I wrote some stuff about it but realised that I was rambling, so I deleted it and decided to get to the point.

While I've been thinking about it all day, I saw something on the news tonight that pissed me off and reminded me of what I was thinking about. This high-school student was expelled because his father accidentally left a hunting knife in the student's car.1 The school, rather than exercise… sanity, decided to push the no-tolerance bullshit and preach about “consequences”.

I'm really not a rules person. I went to a high-school that possessed a myriad of useless rules that wasted the very ink used to print them. Once, I was discussing my philosophy on rules with a friend of mine who was a mother of four children. Her question was how I could expect someone to grow up with a “respect” for rules if they didn't have rules as a child?

No, that's the problem. Rules are supposed to be the means for an orderly society, not the ends. When you groom a respect for the rules, they become sacred. That's not a good thing. When rules become sacred, you have situations like the above.

If you were a judge, would you convict a person of trespassing onto another person's property in order to save a man from drowning in a pond on that property? The only sane thing to do is to ignore the rules.
