What's with the embargo?

Recently, I've been taking a liking to new things, and one of those new things has me wondering: why does the United States have an embargo against Cuba: because they're a communist dictatorship? Well, China and Vietnam are both communist dictatorships, and the United States is trading goods with the both of them like two preadolescents would exchange Pokémon cards.

There is good news: it seems that Maine has taken a step in the right direction.1
